Its grassroots conception began in 1996 as a Christian Block Party reconciliation effort to bring people of different races, denominations and economic backgrounds together in a once-a-year community event. The Block Party committee became Mission Missouri, opened a Soup Kitchen on January 5, 1998, created a culturally diverse Board of Directors and received 501C 3 status in 1999. Since that time MM has become a professional and experienced team that has successfully managed state and federal grants as well as a $1.5 million substance abuse program
