Parenting Life Skills

Two back to back four week sessions are utilized to provide parents with new information and coping skills in order to become better parents. Clients can come into the program at the beginning of either four week session and classes are two hours each week. One four week session is called "Apples and Eagles" and provides insight about how we were parented as children and how some of the coping skills we learned as children are not working well as we try to parent our children. The class offers information from several sources about nurturing and loving our children unconditionally as well as disciplining our children with tough love and consistency. The second four week class utilizes the "Magic, 1, 2, 3" system for discipline. Dr. Phelan's DVD series offers a practical way to overcome the challenges of providing effective discipline to our children. Both four week sessions require weekly attendance. If one session is missed the program must be started again. No one can come into the group after the first class. Referrals are often from Family Support Division for those parents whose children may be in the foster care system or who may be facing that possibility.
